Ms. Goodale admires that sustainability is intrinsic to the Deerfield experience; hiking to the rock, shriving, the triathlon, fishing, and hanging out by the river are just a few ways Deerfield students connect with nature on campus. She particularly appreciates how these sustainable practices are driven by the student body, and primarily because students love Deerfield, not just because the activities are good for the environment. However, it is crucial as a community to continue to educate students on how Deerfield manages their footprint, because as a group, healthy habits are more likely to catch on.
Wondering how to contribute to a more sustainable environment? Ms. Goodale recommends finding practices that feel uplifting rather than a sacrifice– in other words, find activities that will benefit yourself and the environment simultaneously. For example, try switching to cosmetic products with healthier chemicals, or eating local food sources. But above all, the best way to benefit Deerfield’s environment is to just go outside with a group of friends, because growing that type of emotional connection with nature is how environmental causes will begin to deeply resonate with the Deerfield community.
